CLUB HISTORY

NEWTON NETBALL CLUB - 1986 to 1989

Newton Netball Club transferred from the United Church Association to the SA Netball Association in 1986 and entered one team in the B1 Grade. The team had great success winning several premierships and was quickly promoted through the grades to finally enter the State League Competition in 1989.

In the club's first year of State League, the Club was able to field eight teams, including three Junior Sides.

The A1 side (today’s Premier League equivalent) made history that year by becoming the first League club to win a game in its first year in the elite competition. That year, the Club also produced its first State U/21 representative.

NEWTON JAGUARS NETBALL CLUB - 1990 - 2025

In 1990, Newton Netball Club amalgamated with the Jaguars Netball Club to form the Newton Jaguars Netball Club. The Club fielded 18 teams: seven Senior sides, nine Junior, and two intellectually disabled (C6) teams. New players were attracted to the club including an ex-Australian player and State Age Teams Coach who joined as the Club’s Skills Co-ordinator.

In 1992, the Club qualified for the finals series after only four years in the state’s elite competition and the Club produced another State U/21 representative player.

1993 saw six senior and six junior teams play in the finals resulting in two sides becoming Premiers. That year the Club was also known as the ‘Castalloy Jaguars’ named after the Club’s major sponsor Castalloy Ltd.

In 1994 more elite players joined the Club including one dual Olympian Basketball and State netball representative and two Australian Squad members.

Within 10 years the club had become a very competitive force at the elite level and had attracted some of the competition's best players to play for the Newton Jaguars including Di Ridley, Lean Strachan, Nicole Washington, Trudy Gardiner, Mel Tump, Kerrin Truslove, Tracy Sims, Audine Cobb, Mandy Edwards, Vicki Morphett, Sheridan Abbott, Jamie McKinnon, Carrie Worthley, and Julie Nykiel.

In 1998, Newton Jaguars won the State League Reserves Premiership.

The period between 2000 and 2002 saw the commencement of some significant stabilizing influences on the Club. Spring Gully Foods became a major sponsor, and the Club’s President, Jim Haldane, went on to preside for eight years. The Management Committee was strengthened through the recruitment of members with professional backgrounds and pro-active attitudes. The Management Committee developed and implemented a strategic plan to improve the Club's strategies for State League, Senior and Junior success and development, with a vision of being a competitive, top four club in all represented grades.

Between 2003 and 2006, the Club fielded an average of 25 teams each year. The Club membership grew to approximately 500, including players, officials, coaches, umpires, and parents. Thirteen teams reached the finals, resulting in five Premierships. The State League and Reserves had only moderate success. Several players were selected in SASI programs, and several were selected as State U/21 Team representatives. The Club became more involved in-country development carnivals.

2007 was the club's most significant year for on-court success. The club won the State League Premiership. 26 teams competed in the AMND winter competition, and thirteen competed in the summer competition. Thirteen teams played in the AMND finals, resulting in five Premierships. Three players represented the State, and one player was selected in SASI. The Club was also rewarded with the State’s Best & Fairest Player award.

In 2008 and 2009, the Club averaged 29 teams competing in winter netball and 21 teams competing in the summer competition.
The State League remained a competitive force and played in finals, resulting in a second and fourth placing consecutively. One player was selected by SASI, with six players representing the state. One player was selected in the Netball SA Team of the Year, and another was selected in the Thunderbirds squad. The Club continued to field teams in all grades associated with NSA and AMND.

NJNC has been able to field a team at AMND for the intellectually disabled/integration difficulty (C6) competition. The team was integrated into the Club from SASRAPID (South Australian Sports Recreation Association for People with Integration Difficulties Inc) in 1989. The team was under the guidance and influence of Life Member Grace Tucker, who received many awards for her service in this area. C6 teams have won multiple Premierships and second placings.

In 2011, the Club had an exceptionally successful year with 11 teams across the AMND Grades playing Grand Finals, and of those, 9 teams finished as Premiers.

2012 - 2025 - TO BE UPDATED.

NORWOOD NETBALL CLUB - 2025...
After several years of low ladder ranking in the Premier League. The committee deemed it necessary to make a change in the best interest of the club's future. After discussions with the iconic Norwood Football Club, a Co-Branding agreement was reached, and it was decided that as of the 2025/2026 Summer Season, Newton Jaguars would be known as Norwood Netball Club.

The club colours of Yellow & Blue have been replaced with the formidable Red & Blue colours of the Norwood Football Club.

The club announced its rebrand at a press conference on the renowned Norwood Oval in March and celebrated its launch at the ground in July 2025. The club is looking forward to what the future brings in this exciting new adventure!!
